The GPS can be used on land, at sea and in the air. The only time the GPS fails is when it is unable to receive a signal like when you are inside most buildings, in caves or subterranean locations, or underwater. But unless you are often within those type of areas, the GPS is a must-have. Aside from its usual purposes, the GPS can go beyond vehicle tracking or map navigation.

Reviews

Connect your 478 to your computer via the USB cable. Open Google Earth and click on "tools" then click on "gps", select "garmin" then click on "import". Look in you Google Earth screen and go to "Places" and select one of your "active log" then click on the + sign to get to "path", highlight "path" and then click on the "play tour" button. You can speed up the fast forward button or hit pause and zoom out. Pretty cool.

Outstanding product! Kit contains everything you need for boating and automobile usage and its user friendly converting easily from water to street applications. Large screen with great backlighting making it easy to see while on the water in poor lighting and weather conditions. I am also impressed with how long the battery lasts even with the backlight on maximum intensity. Before purchasing I had read about the poor quality of the 12 volt adaptor but haven't had any issues with my unit.

This is a wonderful gps-very accurate. This is the first one I have used and it is very easy to understand. I wish I had read description better-there are no fresh water lakes included. The value is great for this product.

The 478 is perfect for roads and coastal waters. However, the chip available for additional information regarding inland lakes does not include the Army Corps of Engineers flood control lakes in the Northern PA area.

Does everything it claims to do and does it well, on both land and sea. Great battery life and good sensitivity and satellite reception.

So next time you decide to hit the road and take a driving spree, the Garmin's 478 GPS should be on top of your list.
